TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Learning is a process of acquiring knowledge through exploration. I endeavor to help students develop for themselves this process. To expedite this development, I draw from my experience, having taught a variety of music courses: composition seminars, private composition lessons, aural skills sections, class discussions sections on the cultural context of music, and nine years of private guitar instruction. Through this array of courses and settings, I have developed a lexicon of technical approaches and ideas regarding musical education, for composition, guitar, and voice.

These ideas and approaches are pivotal in my assisting young musicians to find their own process of learning and making music. First, I determine or identify the students' knowledge or skill base, fostering their need to feel comfortable with what they know and can do. Second, I urge students to make themselves open to musical exploration. Third, in the areas where they feel unknowledgeable, I try to give students the tools to expand their comprehension.

Because musical knowledge and ability is intertwined with one's personality, I understand that every student I teach needs a slightly different technical approach from another, a different kind of attention, perhaps a different kind of coaching.

In order for students to progress at a satisfactory pace, students should practice and engage seriously and regularly with the musical materials presented and learned during lessons.
