MKD i5 Mini Tour Feb 2-5

Greetings All,

Hope you had a wonderful, meaningful, and restful holiday season. I am excited to let you know that the McAllister Keller Duo will be on tour this February! Please enjoy the press release below:

Dec. 11, Medford, Oregon — The McAllister Keller Duo (MKD), extend their eclectic reach up and down ‘the 5’ in early February 2024.  Spanning centuries and invoking the ‘End Times’, Songs & Ayres will feature music for two guitars, counter tenor, and the audience’s mobiles devices (!).

In their sweep up and down I-5, MKD’s first concert will be at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon, on Friday, Feb 2 at 7:30pm, where Dr. Derek Keller is on faculty and directs the new Music Industry & Production Program. MKD’s concert will include songs from Elizabethan England by John Dowland and guitar duos by Paulo Bellinati, Toru Takemitzu, Al Di Meola, and Steve Reich. The program will conclude with Keller’s The End Times Are a’Changin’, an immersive experience of music, projections, and the audience’s mobile devices turned on! “Over the last several years, I have been working on multimedia works that include the audience’s use and sound of their mobile devices,” says Keller. “I am thrilled to finally bring my longtime collaborator and friend, Colin to SOU to play this music in such a great hall!” The music of which Keller mentions are part of his Modular Music Project. “They are concert hall pieces, which sometimes feel like participatory art installations, or as (not-so) silent films with live accompaniment,” Keller writes in a chapter of a book that his very own duo partner Dr. Colin McAllister edited: Music in the Apocalyptic Mode (Brill, 2023). “A few years back I asked Keller to compose a piece for me that blends my artistic work as a guitarist with my research on apocalyptic literature across time and cultures,” says Dr. McAllister, “and wow, did he deliver!”

On top of their fabulous guitar playing, the duo brings unique experiences to their audiences owing to their wide aesthetic purview and extra-guitar talents. David Sckolnick of The Gazette (Colorado Springs, CO) writes:

“The music existed on two intentionally intersecting planes:  circa 1600 and modern times.  Keller is a gifted singer with a voice perfectly suited for the gentle Renaissance sounds of John Dowland.  The three songs he offered by the Englishman accompanied by McAllister were pure pleasure.  The music essentially passed from ancient to contemporary […and] seemed to contain a treatise of the history of guitar styles.

At Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, in Sacramento, CA, MKD will also present an evening concert on Saturday at 7:30 pm of the same program, the music of which Ken Herman (San Diego Story) found to be “affectionately and meticulously rendered.” MKD will then zip up to Corvallis, Oregon to play for the Corvallis Guitar Society’s (CGS) monthly gathering at Odd Fellows Hall on Monday, February 5. CGS’s monthly gathering begins at 7:15pm with the concert at 8:15pm.
